This 1996 Fender Custom Shop Eric Clapton Signature Stratocaster, masterbuilt by J.W. Black, is a standout example from a notable period in Fender Custom Shop history. Built during the Lace Sensor era of the Clapton model, it pairs the familiar feel of a vintage-inspired Strat with the added versatility that helped make the Clapton Signature one of Fender’s most practical artist models.
The guitar features an alder body with a Master Grade quilted maple top, giving it a more refined look than a standard production Clapton Strat. The flamed maple neck and fingerboard, 9.5” radius, and 25.5” scale length keep the feel comfortable, responsive, and unmistakably Stratocaster, while the gold Fender hardware adds a tasteful Custom Shop touch.
Tonally, this guitar is equipped with Fender Gold Lace Sensor pickups, which are correct for Clapton Signature Strats from this era. Combined with the Clapton active mid-boost circuit and TBX-style tone control, it offers a wide range of sounds—from clean, articulate Strat tones to thicker, more vocal lead tones with added presence and sustain.
The J.W. Black build is an important part of this guitar’s appeal. As one of Fender Custom Shop’s early Master Builders, Black’s work is highly regarded, and mid-’90s Clapton Custom Shop models with hand-selected woods, figured maple necks, and gold hardware were produced in very limited numbers. This example stands out as a rare and unique variation of the Clapton Signature model, blending artist-model history with the elevated craftsmanship and visual detail of a collector-grade Custom Shop instrument.
